What type of car insurance should I get in Michigan?

I understand that Michigan is a no-fault state, and as a result everyone gets this PLPD insurance or something. I’m moving from Pennsylvania and had full coverage on my car for about $90/month. I thought PA and MI were both no-fault, but it seems different and the rates I’m being quoted for the same insurance in MI are higher. I’m so confused!! Also, right now I am on State Farm. I’m 25 but on my mom’s plan, and I am getting married/changing my last name and I now live in Michigan so it is past time for me to pay for my own insurance.
Right now I’m on State Farm, and there are agents both here and in PA, but their rates seem to be high.

Michigan is a wierd state for insurance. If your car is worth anything, you will have to have physical damage coverage. Reason: If you are in an accident, the most you can collect is $500.00 from the other insurance company ( it is called a mini tort) unless you ae legally parked at the time of loss. As the laws are this way, the rates are higher as the Insurance co’s cannot collect the damages that they paid out from the other person’s insurance co due to the law only allowing the mini tort $500.00. Also, the closer you are to Detroit, the higher the rates due to the high incidence of auto theft in that area.

Can I pay insurance on my liscence rather than vehicle by vehicle basis?

So right now i am paying auto insurance on a single vehicle, and i want to purchase a second vehicle which would be used maybe 4-8 times a month. My insurance agent (state farm) says i would have to pay insurance on both vehicles seperatly, something i financially dont want to do…i dont want to pay even just the minimum on a vehicle that is not going to be my primary driver. (It is not a “classic” otherwise i would just get the carshow exemption)

I have heard from several sources but havnt been able to confim, that there is a type of auto insurance where you pay the premiums to insure your liscence (rather than individual vehicles), leaving you free to drive any vehicle that is titled to you. Is this true? and if so how can i get it?!

I’ve never heard of any insurance like that.

You should get a multiple vehicle discount & you don’t have to have full coverage on it.

Getting a settlement from an auto accident?

Is there a certain formula for figuring out a settlement offer? One person told me that it is usually 3x the medical bills. I’m sure it probably depends on how severe the injuries are, but in this case they were minor. My pregnant wife and I were struck from behind by another truck well stopped at a stop sign. We did visit the hospital to check on the baby, but no major injuries were sustained. We have about $1500 in medical bills before insurance and about $110 after. The car has already been paid for to get fixed and is no longer an issue. The insurance company offered us $2500; which is way more than what we owe in medical bills. But, what if something else is wrong with me, my wife, or our baby that can’t be forseen. Should we ask for more or should we just consider ourselves lucky to get this much? And, if so what are the steps for negoitating a settlement?

There is no specific formula, however, insurers and attorneys generally use the total medical bills as a starting point in negotiating settlements. Typically, the insurer will try to settle for 1-2x meds, while an attorney will try to get 3-5x meds. Based on your scenario, it seems like you probably had soft tissue injuries, so there shouldn’t be any long term effects. Frankly, I’m surprised the company offered you that much so soon. You could try for more and take the $2500 if they won’t budge. You may want to talk to a lawyer, just keep in mind that while a lawyer’s involvement may increase the ultimate settlement, your net may be the same or less due to fees and costs. Also, your health insurer may be legally entitled to expect you to repay them out of any settlement.

Good luck.

Do I need insurance if I don’t own a car?

I’m getting my Drivers License soon and my mum is having a cow because she thinks she will have to pay $350 a month for insurance for me. In Drivers Ed they said as long as I have permission from the owner of the car and the car is covered by a minimum of $10,000 coverage that I will be fine. And I don’t need insurance until I own a car.
Can someone shine some light on this situation? :3 I live in Washington state if it matters.

NO!! You don’t need your own policy if you are just driving someone Else’s car. I deal with accidents all day every day be a wrecker driver. Now some of the “cheaper” insurance companies will try to refuse to pay but for 29 dollars a month what do you expect. Now if you are driving moms car you will need to be added to her policy as a driver.

Insurance and Totaling a car?

Hello,
I was recently a victim of a hit and run on a brand new 07 car. The back was smashed and the right back tire was sideways. The insurance company had me bring it to one of their authorized body shops. After 9k worth of damage, I received the car back. I was told the insurance adjusters told the shop not to replace certain parts etc. When I received the car, I brought it to the dealer to get it a wheel alignment. The mechanic came back and said the car could not be aligned and there was still major damage (subframe was bent – I could even see it). He also stated that the car will never drive the same after the accident even if the subframe is replaced and it would pull to one side and cause wear on the tires.

Do I have the right to demand the car totalled from the insurance company? The car was 3 months old before the accident and I would want it in the same condition that I got it in.

Thanks
PS car was hit in NJ – insurance in NY

Insurance usually total a car if the cost to repair is 50-70% of the car’s value. It would be a good idea to get at least 3 separate estimates of repairs from different repair shops (excluding the one your insurance uses) and get it in writing to show your insurance company that the car can’t be repaired at the price they’re offering. Also, there are safety issues to be considered and depreciation value if you get the car repaired.
There could also be hidden damages when the car is taken apart. Get this all in writing and demand that your car is totaled but only IF you can prove that the damage is going to end up costing much more (usually 70% of car’s market value). And don’t sign anything from the insurance company until you agree on a settlement.

Your insurance co has the obligation to return your car to its pre-accident state but this doesn’t mean they will replace the parts with brand new parts either.
