The Top 5 GPS Systems in the Market
GPS systems – one of the most useful modifications you can make to your car that will have no effect on yourcar insurance premium! It may even reduce your insurance costs, by helping you keep your crash-free status and that no-claim bonus. GPS systems are more useful and more affordable than ever. So what are the current gold standard models? We check them out.
Tomtom XXL540
The Tomtom is one of the few GPS brands currently in the market where the brand is actually synonymous with the product – “Can I borrow your Tomtom? No, my Tomtom’s broken”. The XXL540 gives you lane guidance and map correction in addition to all the other cool features, and it has a 5-inch screen for easy viewing. Do remember that the big screen means less road view, especially in small cars, though. The recommended retail is $349 , but you can pick them up a little cheaper by shopping around.
Garmin Nuvi 1450T
Garmin is one of the market-leading brands in GPSs, along with Tomtom. The Nuvi 1450Thas a big 5 inch screen, and is rated as very easy to use. It also has features like junction view, which uses real-world photos to aid in recognition of the turn you need to take. However, the 1450T does have its drawbacks – a big screen means less road view for you, and the traffic messaging alerts don’t always work as well as you would hope. Don’t let your obscured road view cause bingles that up your car insurance premium … but do enjoy the red light and speed camera warnings, and the school zone reminders that you can manually program.
Mio A430
Mio is not as well known a brand as Tomtom, Garmin or Navman, but this no frills model of GPS has a great screen size and brightness for the price, the map screen is uncluttered, and the unit has a necessary ’speak keyboard letter’ which helps you know what you just typed. Don’t depend on the camera or school zone warnings, but enjoy a good basic GPS at a good price.
Sygic Mobile Maps for iPhone
If you have an iPhone, this GPS app will cost you just $80 … and won’t clutter your windscreen at all! The app supports finding your contact list’s addresses, and offers text to speech functionality. User reviews give it an impressive 8.9 out of 10 … but reviewers warn that city performance is not good, and you’ll have to watch out for cameras yourself.
Uniden Trax 5000
The Uniden Trax is big and very clear for the price paid – a 5-inch screen for the same price as the Tomtom and Garmin models. It has both Australian and New Zealand maps, so should find a very strong niche markets amongst go-betweens. The screen landmarks can be a little distracting … but pretty!
One of the major causes of car crashes is distraction … including reading maps. Program your route into a GPS unit, and you have much less chance of bumping up your car insurance premiums with a claim. They are more affordable than they ever have been!
