Would you recommend a new(er) car or a cheap older car for a college student?

I am in college and about to start driving (I’m a little late lol). Anyway, i have about $1000 saved up…so I can either use that to buy a really cheap old car or use it as a down payment for something that has been used (I was thinking in the $7,000-$10,000 range). What do you recommend? I really do not want to be tied down to car and insurance payments but I don’t want to buy a cheap car that is going to die in less than a year. All opinions and advice are appreciated!

i’d get an old cheap car, save up some money , then get my own new car. i mean besides, your not gonna be using your car very much in college , there is a lot of transportation there, trust me.

Just get a quote from insurers you get from yellow pages,. the internet, the TV, the radio.
Simply don’t go for the first price they quote you but spend a few days collecting data.

Car insurance temp cover- I sometimes buy cars and sell them on for a small profit, is there insurance company

that I can go to and get a 1 day cover for the car I’m going to buy or will it be cheaper to get insurance for myself to drive any car, is this possible, also if I wanted to buy and sell cars all the time do I have to have a special licence to do this? thanks

What people have failed to point out is that the law has changed. At one time of day you could take out fully comprehensive cover and then be insured to drive someone else’s car third party fire or theft.
Due to people taking advantage of this and insuring say a Ford Focus fully comp then driving say a Porsche under the third party rule thus saving themselves thousands of pounds in insurance costs.
Most of the insurance companies no longer allow third party use on there policies and others are following suit. And the law has been changed also to plug the loophole. Only insurance companies aren’t telling there customers this and like me they find out to there cost too late.
Also it is against the law to sell cars at the road side now,even if it’s just a one off and the police are clamping down on rogue traders who do so.
To stay on the right side of the law you require a trading license and insurance. Unfortunately this is going to cost you a lot of money and unless you can swallow the costs or incorporate them into your pricing when selling a car then being a small time dealer isn’t worth your while or the heavy fines or even prison sentence you could end up with.

I’m moving out of my parents house in a few months, and am at the point of looking at car insurance rates. I’ve always just paid my fees on their shared account, which was only about $25. Friends in Ohio that also live on their own pay about $80 on their own plans per month, and they have accident histories. When I ask for quotes with a clean history, Progressive gave me a $350 quote!

Does having a motorcycle license effect your car insurance rates?

I’ve been looking at taking the course, wondering if theres any other implications I havent considered.
Anyone have some experience with this?
Assume I’ll have my motorcycle endorsement on my license, but not own a motorcycle.
I live in RI, by the way.

Hasn’t affected our policy rates, my husband and I both got our motorcycle licenses 3 years ago. A bike is a lot different in the way it handles, and in the situations you can find yourself in with traffic. You can’t relax your attention at all. Good luck, have fun, and be careful.
