Is there a way to purchase insurance for frequent car rental?
I travel sometimes and one of the dumbest expenses that I can think of is the crazy amount of the car insurance at the rental place. It is 36 dollars per day for the minimum coverage just to protect the car from the rental place. It does not cover your liability for damages to the car that you collide with. I asked my insurance guy where I buy my standard insurance and he was no help. Can I buy some kind of insurance that will totally cover me when I rent cars. I think that my cheapo liability insurance for my car will not cover me when I drive other cars or out of the country. Also I will call my credit card but I’m not sure that this option is available to me. I want to purchase insurance on my own month per month if possible. Does this exist?
The rule is that YOUR insurance will cover if your are driving a rental car with the same coverage you have on your policy. So in effect, it takes over if in an accident or gets damages.
But some companies (high risk) will not cover, unless it had been in an accident (in shop for repairs) or possibly for mechanical reasons and in shop, so you need rental.
Also, most companies may not insure outside the US and you have to get the insurance in that country. Mexico is a good example.
As for credit cards; some of the coverage they have is IFFY, and may have a lot of exclusions, so you have to watch out.
Call the insurance company that insures you and specifically ask to talk to an adjuster. They would know since they handle auto claims and can tell you if it would cover or not. The agent may not want to commit to an answer just in case you have an accident and the insurance company comes back later and denys.
There maybe one other exception. Check into a non-owners policy. This policy pays just like regular auto insurance, but it is secondary to any other auto insurance. It pays for damages to autos you DON’T OWN ONLY. But not sure if it would apply to rentals, since many who get them, don’t own cars but may drive family/friends cars on occasional basis, so they could exclude rentals.
If your insurance company wont cover, then I suggest you get on the phone and talk to several agents and pose the question. I have worked in many companies and some do and some don’t. Even if you have to pay more to guarantee the coverage, if you compare $36 times the times you rent per year, it still maybe cheaper in the long run.
good luck
