Drive America cars to Canada?
I bought a Honda CR-V (assembled in Ohio) from Erie, PA , and I have a H-1 working visa . I would like to drive and transfer the car to Toronto, Ontario. Does anyone know what/how steps I should take to successfully transfer my car (ie. insurance, license plate issuing, documents to bring to border)?
Thank you in advance.
If you’re going to be registering the vehicle in your name it isn’t too horrible. You’ll need to get a K22 import form at the border when you cross into Canada. This will be granted as long as your vehicle meets Canadian standards, which most American vehicles do. You’ll also need a letter from Honda USA confirming that there are no outstanding recalls on your vehicle, so you may want to arrange that letter so that you receive it dated shortly before you cross the border.
You’ll have a few days to transfer your registration to Ontario (check with the Ontario DMV but I believe it’s 60 days). You’ll need to get the vehicle inspected by an accredited garage to show that it is in good mechanical and physical condition. Once that is done you can purchase insurance on it, then take evidence of your insurance (your “pink card”) to a license plate issuer and get your plates and your driver’s license.
