Why is car insurance hiked up if your unemployed? (UK)?
I was made compulsorily redundant on 31st Dec, my insurance is due today.
My renewal notice come through from ecar (who have been very good for last 3 years) saying £384, so I updated my details saying I was unemployed and its hiked up to £700+
I’ve gone on loads of other sights and they are in the region of £400-£600
Its unfair, I didn’t choose to lose my job |:o|
Any suggestions on how to get it cheaper?
I’ve been on confused.com, moneysupermarket, gocompare, comparethe market, Tesco, churchill, morethan etc.
Would it make a much of a difference if I added someone else on the policy?
Note* I graduated from uni in 2001, got a job unrelated to my degree, worked for this company for almost 7 an half years. I don’t know what career to go for now, and obviousily I want a new job, I have a mortgage on my own.

i work in insurance and it can be unfair in how they rate sometimes,
sometimes it can make a difference if you add someone else on,
usually if it’s an older person who has had there licence for years without any claims or convictions, tends to be better if it’s a woman, personally mine came down £40 by adding my future mother in law even though she will never drive it, doesn’t sound like a lot but it’s better off in my pocket.
some company’s will also give a discount if you restrict the mileage,
if your car is an older car rather than automatically going for third party fire and theft cover sometimes comprehensive can be cheaper, sounds daft but it’s true
